How To Impress The Boss

How to Impress the Boss! This might be useful for emerging leaders. Having co-founded and successfully exited two Companies, I decided to share some of my real life insights and Lessons Learned in Leadership so that it might be helpful for others. In my case, I fell into a Leadership Role out of necessity, and at times, I found it extremely difficult, but these are the good things that people did that meant the most. I hope you enjoy and find it useful.

  1. Do what you say you are going to do. Trust is Critical.
  2. Plan ahead when you are on leave. Make sure that you don't give people extra stress or things to worry about. Deputize and give everyone a handover.
  3. Use the phone when it's urgent. Show that you are pro-active and don't rely on email.
  4. Give them updates on what they have asked you to do. Then they are not worrying if its been done or not.
  5. Do more than the minimum expected. Most 'Bosses' have had to work extraordinarily hard so they value it when people show that they are willing to go the extra mile. Things like Self-Directed Learning, Coming up with Ideas that you developed in your own time, learning something new that you didn't need 'training' for.
  6. Don't waste time on Low Value add Stuff. Sometimes its unavoidable to spend time on low value add, but show that you understand the difference and prioritise Value Added Activities
